Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Meetings

Meetings online have numerous advantages particularly in an increasingly online world. Meetings that are online save time for everyone involved. Participants can attend the meeting without having to leave their desks or grab food. They don’t need to print documents and connect to an AV system, or take their bags away. Participants can also mute themselves when they want to take a break or check their email.

Online meetings are also more punctual. It could be because participants don’t have to rush to the bathroom prior to making their calls or worry about their attire. Maybe it’s because they’re able to choose from a range of places that are able to accommodate their needs at home or a cafe to the beach.

Online meetings can also save a business money. When a business hosts a meeting in-person, it must pay for the room and refreshments. This is not the case for online meetings.

However, there are certain negatives to online meetings which shouldn’t be ignored. It isn’t easy to grab people’s attention during a meeting when they are unable to see each others’ faces. This could result in people scrolling through their emails or checking their social media accounts during the meeting, which is not the ideal way to conduct a productive meeting. Meetings that are held online don’t provide the same level of communication as people aren’t able to read non-verbal or body language cues.
